Jesús Menéndez left the “Telégrafo” Hotel in Bayamo and visited several sugar mills on his way.  On the way back, he left for the town of Yara, with the aim of taking the train to Bayamo. 

At an invitation from Paquito Rosales they board the train from Manzanillo.  It was 8:20 pm when the train entered the city of the gulf.  Manuel Quesada and Paquito Rosales were already going down, followed by Menéndez and Casillas.  The latter ordered the soldiers of the escort to lead Quesada and Menéndez into custody, but changing his mind, he said: "I'm taking Menéndez."

 The sugar leader clarified that he was not accompanying him to the Barracks;  He descended with the serene dignity of a representative of the people and began to walk with his usual elastic step along the platform, followed closely by Casillas, who drew his pistol and began to shoot him while shouting: "I'll take you, dead or alive.” Jesús Menéndez lay there lifeless, three bullets had wounded his body;  the first pierced the pinna of his ear, the second hit him in the upper end of the shoulder and the third, which was fatal, pierced his heart.
