Dos Ríos is a small town belonging to the municipality of Jiguaní, where José Martí fell in combat on May 19, 1895. It is located 22 km northeast of the city of Jiguaní and 57 km from Bayamo, capital of Granma province.
Four months after his death, an 8-meter-high obelisk was erected to replace the rustic wooden cross raised by Máximo Gómez, which marks the place where the National Hero lost his life.
Commemorating the anniversary of his death, every May 19, the inhabitants of Granma and other neighboring provinces carry out a pilgrimage that includes the entire path that José Martí followed from the landing in Playitas de Cajobabo to the place where he gave his life fighting to achieve independence from Spain.
