 Historical Curiosities:

  • The Major Parochial Church San Salvador de Bayamo (today the cathedral), which was partially destroyed by the fire and was later rebuilt, is the only religious temple on the island that has a mural with patriotic content inside.
  •  On April 18, 1819, the first President of the Republic in Arms, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, was born.
  •  On July 8, 1832, the first president of the neocolonial republic, Tomás Estrada Palma, was born.
  •   Bayamo is the first city in Cuba burned by his own children, on January 12, 1869, before handing it over to the Spanish colonialists.
  •  For being where for the first time the concept of what was Cuban was refined, the systematic struggles of its inhabitants for self-government, the scene of the first rebellions for the sake of independence, where the National Anthem was sung for the first time, it is considered the Cradle of the Cuban Nationality.
  •  José Fornaris y Luque, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and Francisco del Castillo Moreno, from Bayamo, were the creators of the first Cuban romantic and troubadour song, La Bayamesa.
  •  On June 23, 1821, Francisco Vicente Aguilera y Tamayo was born, who reached the rank of Major General of the Liberation Army and was Vice-President of the Republic of Cuba in Arms.  He is considered the Father of the Republic.
  •  The current Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Park in Manzanillo got its name by agreement of the City Council on December 21, 1898, the date on which it was decided to change it from Plaza de Recreo to the one it currently holds.  The park is not rectangular, but irregular; that is, it has different dimensions on its four sides and these are its measurements:

By Maceo Street it measures 100.13 meters.

By Masó Street it measures 98.03 meters.

By Martí Street it measures 73.30 meters.

By Merchán Street it measures 70.30 meters.

  •  Also on that date the grace of the four streets that surround it was changed, so that Real began to be called Martí (perhaps the first street to be called Martí in Cuba); Salas became Maceo; Valcourt began his tribute to Merchán, while Isabel Segunda stopped having a royal nomenclature to honor who should have been the first President of the Republic in Arms: Masó.
  •  The busts of the patricians that flank the four corners, were inaugurated on May 20, 1925 and each one looks at the street that gives it its name, in addition, the traffic goes towards them.
