manuel muñoz

Manuel Muñoz Cedeño.  Violinist, composer and conductor.  He was considered one of the most outstanding Cuban musicians of the 19th century.  He formed the first orchestra in Bayamo, his hometown.

 He was born on January 1, 1813, in a modest colonial house located on Mercaderes Street, today Maceo, in Bayamo, in the place occupied by the Provincial Museum of this city;  adjoining the mansion where two eminent Cubans were born, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and Tristán de Jesús Medina.

In the legendary Camagüey, especially in the Sierra de Najasa, very close to Santa Cruz del Sur, Captain Rosa Castellanos Castellanos, (Rosa la Bayamesa) developed an intense and fruitful work from the very beginning of the Ten Years War in Cuba.

 She was born a slave, in a barracks in the town of El Dátil, Bayamo, in 1834 ("perhaps on a simple pallet of straw or dry grass in a slave barracks"), in what was then the most rebellious area of ​​the country, and tha was the place where her first acts of rebellion were carried out and she joined the Liberation Army from the beginning of the 1868 war, which put an end to the silence of Spanish colonial exploitation on the Caribbean island.  She is the daughter of Don Matías Castellanos and Francisca Antonia Castellanos, slaves brought from Africa who assumed the surnames of their masters.

Jesús Rabí

Jesús Rabí Jesús “Rabí” Sablón Moreno (Jiguaní, Oriente, Cuba, June 24, 1845 - Baire, Oriente, Cuba, December 5, 1915) was a Cuban soldier and patriot of the 19th century.  He came from a humble peasant family, his father being the Dominican Carlos Sablón Mañach and his mother the Cuban Jiguani woman María Moreno.

Jesús and his brothers received little education, due to the economic conditions of the family.  What they were able to learn was taught to them by their father.
